PLOT: Oscar is the nickname given by the narrator to a young chimpanzee in his toddler years. He is part of a close-knit tribe of Chimpanzees. They occupy a forest territory which is rich in native fruits, nuts, and figs. There's also other food sources, albeit quite disgusting to humans. The chimps hunt small tree monkey, and they also eat ants. Oscar is tended by his mother, nicknamed Eesha. In the chaos of an attempted raid by a rival gang chimpanzees, Eesha goes missing. As told by narrator, Eesha is most probably the victim of a nocturnal leopard. Oscar goes weeks, alone in the jungle. His mother has not returned. Other Chimpanzees reject him. Oscar's weight has gone down; He doesn't know where to find the staple items that are part of the chimpanzee's diet. If he can find nuts, he doesn't yet remember how his mother cracked them open. The rival gang returns. They want to invade the territory for the fig trees and nut trees. The colony reacts. The rival gang is driven off. Peace is restored, and Oscar has been adopted. Oscar tries to follow Freddy, the leader of the Chimp colony. Freddy does not reject Oscar. Freddy assumes guardianship over Oscar, teaching him how to crack nuts. Oscar rides on Freddy's back wherever Freddy goes. Oscar is once more eating regularly. Freddy takes good care of him, and the other chimps in the colony accept Oscar as a friend.
